Licht is Macht

A short interview with historian Jan van den Noort, reflecting on the early days of electric power and lighting in the city of Rotterdam.

From its introduction light and electricity were used as symbols of power to literally project an image of prosperity and to attract international investment.

img_3028This image depicts a feast and dance for the upper classes lit by electric light in Het Park in 1881. The occasion drew crowds of locals who watched from nearby dikes.
